S. P. Jananathan Biography

S.P. Jananathan is a National award winning filmmaker associated with Tamil cinema. He is known as a film producer and director. His debut film as a director, Iyarkai (2003) won the National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Tamil in 2004. He worked under many acclaimed film directors before turning a full-fledged director in 2004. Since then he has directed three more Tamil films, produced one and has also written screenplay and dialogues for a few. He scripted and directed Iyarkai (2003), E (2006), Peranmai (2009) and Purampokku Engira Podhuvudamai (2015). He wrote the dialogues of 2015 film, Bhooloham. All his films were critically well-appreciated and noticed for new themes and treatment.

S.P. Jananathan hails from Tamil Nadu. He was born on May 7, 1959. Chennai is his hometown. He worked as an assistant director for a few years before he received his first break as a film director. He worked as an assistant to directors like B. Lenin, Bharathan, Vincent Selva and Keyar. He won praises for his debut flick as a director and screenwriter, Iyarkai (2003). The movie bagged the best regional film award at National film awards. The movie was a light romantic story starring Arun Vijay, Shaam, Seema Biswas and Kutti Radhika.

In 2006 he directed his second flick, a Tamil medical-thriller film titled E. The film was appreciated for its fresh storyline, and starred Jiiva, Nayantara, Karunaas and Pasupathy in pivot roles. He directed two more movies after that - Peranmai (2009) and Purampokku Engira Podhuvudamai (2015). Both the movies received positive reviews from critics for their fresh storyline and treatment.
