Ashish Vidyarthi Biography

Ashish Vidyarthi is a well known villain of Indian movies. He is equally successful in North as well as South. He is noted for his antagonist characters he has played on screen for numerous successful action movies. He has won National awards in supporting actor role for Dhrohakal in 1995. He won Bengal Film Journalists' Association - Best Actor Award (Hindi) for Is Raat Ki Subah Nahin (1996).  He received Star Screen Award for Best Villain in the year 1996 for Is Raat Ki Subah Nahin. He has been nominated two times for best villain in Filmfare for his roles in Drohkaal and Is Raat Ki Subah Nahin, though he couldn’t win both. Though born as a Keralite he is most known for his powerful antagonist characters of Hindi cinema.

 

Ashish Vidyarthi was born in Thalassery, Kerala on 19 June 1962. His mother is Reba Vidyarthi, a renowned Kathak dancer of Bengali origin. His father is a theatre artist from Kerala, Govind Vidyarthi. Govind Vidyarthi was a great fan of freedom fighter, Ganesh Shankar Vidyarthi who died in a lathi charge during the British rule. So, he assigned the sir name ‘Vidyarthi’ as due respect to this freedom fighter. The family moved to Delhi in 1969 and he completed his studies there.

 

Ashish started acting in minor roles in regional television serials. He got a minor role in Kannada Film Anand, followed by Malayalam movie, Hijack. His big breaks were through Hindi movies - Naajayaaz and Baazi and he became one of the most sought negative artists of the industry. Apart from his award winning movies, his major Bollywood movies are - Haseena Maan Jaayegi, Bichoo, Gaja gamini, Refugee, Arjun Pandit, Janwar, 1942: A Love Story, Jeet, Mrityudaata, Daud, Vaastav: The Reality, Joru ka ghulam, Ek Rishtaa: The Bond of Love, Jodi no 1, Kyo Kii... Main Jhuth Nahin Bolta, Hum kise se kum nahin, Kya Yehi Pyaar Hai, Badal, Kaho Naa... Pyaar Hai, Vishwavidhaata, Ziddi, Barfi, Rakta Charitra, Awarapan, Major Saab and Soldier.

 

Among his Malayalam movies, he worked with Dileep in Chess and CID Moosa. He has also acted in Bengali, Kannada, Telugu, Oriya and Tamil movies also.
