Yuvan Shankar Raja Biography

Yuvan Shankar Raja is an Indian music composer and singer. He has composed music for several Tamil and Telugu films. He started his musical career in 1996 at the age of 16 when he composed the film score for Aravindhan. Thulluvadho Ilamai got him biggest victory and he became the most sought after composers of the decade. In a span of 14 years, he worked in more than 85 films.

Yuvan Shankar Raja was born on 31st August 1979 in Chennai. He is the youngest child of the famous music composer Ilayaraja. His mother is Jeeva. Music director Karthick Raja and Bhavatharini are his siblings. Film composer Gangai Amaran and R. D. Bhaskar are his uncles. He started his schooling at St. Bede Anglo Indian Higher Secondary School in Chennai and discontinued after tenth standard. He married Sujaya Chandran, his long time girl friend who was a London based singer in 2005. But they divorced in February 2008.

Aravindhan in Tamil was his debut film. But this did not attract the audience. His works in Velai and Kalyana Galatta are also not successful. So he did not get any offer for sometimes. Later he got positive reviews for his work in the film Poovellam Kettuppar. Then he worked in two films of Sundar.C, Unakkaaga Ellam Unakkaaga and Rishi. They got moderate success and his first blockbuster was Dheena.

Some of his albums are Thulluvadho Ilamai, Nandha, April Maadhathil, Mounam Pesiyadhe, Kadhal Samrajyam, Punnagai Poove, etc. 7G Rainbow Colony and Manmadhan are the successful releases of 2004. His works in the romantic comedies Happy and Azhagai Irukkirai Bayamai Irukkirathu gave him positive reviews. Vallavan, Thimiru and Paruthi Veeran earned him name and fame. He is also a playback singer who had sung more than 80 songs so far.

He had won Filmfare Awards twice for Best Music director for the film 7G Rainbow Colony and Filmfare Special Jury Award for the film Oy!. He was nominated for the Filmfare Best Music Director Award five times. He won Cyprus International Film Festival Award for the film Raam. He also received Tamil Nadu State Film Award in the year 2006.
