Mithu Mukherjee Biography

 

Mithu Mukherjee is an actress of 1970s and 1980s, who worked in Bengali, Hindi and Odia films. She predominantly appeared in Bengali films, and was one of the top heroines of 1970s and 1980s, best known for glamorous roles. She retired at her career peak after the super success of her much delayed film, Ashrita in 1990. She marked her screen debut through Shesh Parba in 1971, and owns a handful of good and hit films to her credit. She also worked in a few Hindi movies, in supporting and lead roles, mostly directed by Basu Chatterjee.

 

Mithu Mukherjee hails from a Bengali family of Kolkata, West Bengal. She got her first break to films at the age of 18 in in 1971, when she was casted in the lead role in Shesh Parba. The movie was a commercial hit, which opened her doors towards Bengali cinema, and she started getting more offers. Her second release, Marjina Abdulla – a fantasy film was a blockbuster after which she worked with leading banners and actors of 1970s. She tasted success through movies like Nishikanya, Mouchak, Swayamsiddha etc.

 

Her movies like Hotel Snow Fox and Chander Kachhakachhi flopped at box office while Bhagya Chakra, Bandhan and Sandhi did well at box office. In the second half of 1970s she got offers from Bollywood, and she mostly played lead and parallel lead roles in multi-starrers with ensemble cast. Her supporting role in Dillagi got noticed. Khan Dost, Safed Jhoot and Do Ladke Dono Kadke etc were not so successful and she returned to Bengali films in the early 1980s. Her career slowly started fading after that. She returned in a bang with her much delayed home production, Ashrita in 1990 which became a blockbuster. But she quit acting after that.
