Shabir Shah Biography

Shabir Shah is the founder and president of the Jammu and Kashmir Democratic Freedom Party (JKDFP), a separate political organization of Kashmir. Its prime aim is "right of self-determination" to Jammu and Kashmir. Kashmiri separatist leader Shabir Shah and Nayeem Ahmad Khan are currently detained by Kashmiri Police. Shah has been linked with many police cases including a decade-old case of alleged terror financing through the 'hawala channel'.

 

He was born into a middle class family in Anantnag, Kashmir in 1953 and his father Ghulam Mohammad Shah died in police custody in Anantnag in 1989. It was following the repeated harassment by security agencies inquiring about Shabir Shah’s political affiliations. Got influenced by Kashmir separation agitations strongly prevailed then, he also plunged into the same path through non-violence methods. Since got attached with various students’ leagues during his younger days, he was jailed several times and couldn’t complete his education.

 

He got active with the movement at a very young age of only 14, when he led a demonstration against Indian government in Kashmir in 1968 and got arrested and jailed for three months. His activity with the movement affected his education very much and he spent several times either in jail or under home arrest. Since then he has been regularly detained or held home arrest whenever a delicate situation occurs.

 

In the 1970s he organized demonstrations against Hindu fundamentalists and also international conference on Kashmir, for which he has been arrested several times. Shah has been repeatedly booked under Public Safety Act in Kashmir and has been held in preventive detention without trial several times. Following the arrest of JNU students and the recent incidences, many leaders have been arrested and detained and Shabir Shah also belongs to the list.
