Phoolan Devi Biography

Phoolan Devi is popularly known as The Bandit Queen. She was an Indian dacoit who later turned into a politician. In 1979, she was abducted by a gang of dacoits and the leader of the gang, Baboo Gujjar wanted to rape her. She was protected by Vikram who belonged to her caste and when Baboo attempted to rape her, he was killed by Vikram. She became the second wife of Vikram after that. They invaded the village where her husband was and stabbed her estranged husband. The gang warned the older men who marry young girls and left the place.

Phoolan Devi learned the usage of rifle and took part in gang activities. They kidnapped the so-called upper caste landowners for ransom. She used to visit Durga temple after every attempt of crime and thank goddess for protecting her. The whole gang hid in the Chambal ravine. Shri Ram who was released from jail claimed the leadership of the gang and made sexual advancements towards Phoolan. This led to the tension between Vikram and Shri Ram.

Shri Ram belonged to the caste of Thakur while Vikram and Phoolan Devi belonged to Mallas. They started to humiliate one another. Internal conflicts led to the attempt of Shri Ram to kill Phoolan and Vikram and so they escaped. But Vikram was killed later on and she was abducted and raped by many men in Behmai village. She escaped and formed her own gang and started to carry out violent robberies mainly targeting so-called upper caste people and shared the loot with so-called lower caste people.

She marched towards Behmai and killed many people who were responsible for the murder of Vikram. This created lots of agitation and media started to call her as Bandit Queen. Two years after the Behmai massacre, Indira Gandhi government decided to negotiate surrender. She surrendered in 1983 on condition that she would not get death penalty and many other conditions.

She started her political career and contested for 11th and 13th Lok Sabha and won. Her life was taken as a movie Bandit Queen in 1994 by Shekhar Kapoor. She wrote her autobiography and few other books. She was shot and killed at the gate of her New Delhi residence on 25th July 2001. She was shot by Sher Singh Rana, Dheeraj Rana, and Rajbir as an act of revenge.
