Kotwal Ramachandra Biography

Kotwal Ramachandra was an underworld don of Bangalore in the 1970s and 1980s. He was the arch rival of his contemporary - M. P. Jayaraj. There was a strong struggle for power by both these and finally Jayaraj overpowered Ramachandra with the help of Agni Shridhar. He was killed by a four-member goonda team on 22 March 1986. It was done in a farm house near Tumkur with the support of Jayaraj. He had several associates belonging to underworld who continued with the activities. Later Jayaraj and Oil Kumar were suppressed by another emerging criminal Muthappa Rai.

 

Aa Dinagalu, directed by K M Chaitanya shows the rise and death of Ramachandra. A gangster turned writer and reporter Sreedhar, one among those who killed Kotwal later recorded a magnificent work on the underground world of Bangalore in the 1970s and 1980s. The memoir was titled - My Days in the Underworld—Rise of the Bangalore Mafia.

 

He started off working as a bodyguard and driver of D. Devaraj Urs, who then served as the Chief Minister of Karnataka. He came to spotlight for the first time when he threatened the former chief minister Ramakrishna Hegde with a knife which was photographed and highlighted by the media. In the 1970s he emerged as a gangster. He frequently collided with Jayaraj and both wanted to achieve supremacy.

 

Later he was killed by a group of goons. He was hit on the head with a machete by Seetharam Shetty. Bachchan landed blows to the neck and head. Sreedhar struck with his nunchaku and Kotwal died without offering resistance. A well-planned murder, the incident was unaware for outer world for one month. It was a famous murder when it got exposed. His bones were disposed in Bay of Bengal and later buried bones of dogs to mislead the police.
