Pranjal Patil Biography

Pranjal Patil is a visually impaired girl who made it history in UPSC exams, to crack IAS in first attempt. In 2016, this Ulhasnagar girl received the rank of 773 in UPSC exams at the age of 28. However she was denied her well-deserved job in railways, stating her blindness to be the reason. But this courageous girl was never to give up. She worked hard once again, and jumped to 124th rank the next year, thus making it to headlines for the second time. Currently she is appointed as assistant collector at Kochi, Kerala.

This brilliant girl hails from Ulhasnagar, Maharashtra. Pranjal lost vision in one eye when a student in her class stabbed a pencil into it. She was 6 year old then. She studied at the Smt. Kamla Mehta School for the Blind in Dadar, Mumbai, and passed class 12, securing 85 per cent. Later, she took admission in Chandibai College and studied arts subjects. Later she took admission in St. Xaviers College, Mumbai to get her BA degree. Doctors warned that she could lose the vision of other eye as well. Yet she went on to pursue a Master of Arts in International Relations from Jawaharlal Nehru University. She was pursuing her PhD from JNU, when she received the rank of 773 in UPSC exams in 2016.

Though she got a letter from the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT) that she has been allotted a job in the IRAS, she later didn’t receive any communication from either DoPT or Railways. When she contacted them for this reason, she was told verbally that they cannot appoint a person with 100 per cent blindness. She took sweet revenge by achieving 124th rank next time, earning a much higher post which she was denied first. She passed a lot of hindrances in her life, and achieved a feat which many youngsters can get inspired to, and learn from her.
