Sudhir Mishra Biography

Sudhir Mishra is a critically acclaimed director of Bollywood known for the movies – Dharavi, Yeh Woh Manzil To Nahin (1987), Calcutta Mail (2003), Yeh Saali Zindagi (2011), Main Zinda Hoon (1988), Hazaaron Khwaishein Aisi (2005), Is Raat Ki Subah Nahin (1996), Khoya Khoya Chand (2007), Inkaar (2013) and Chameli (2003). He is a successful scriptwriter also. He has received 3 National awards till now. He has also received Ordres de Artes et Lettres by the French Government (equivalent to knighthood). He is one among those directors of Hindi cinema who brought great reformations through scripts and works during the era of 80’s. He still remain in that range and quite successful too. He is behind the powerful scripts of classic movies of 80’s - Jaane Bhi Do Yaaron (1983), Dharavi (1992), Khamosh (1985), Mohan Joshi Hazir Ho! (1984), Inkaar (2013), Tera Kya Hoga Johnny (2010), Is Raat Ki Subah Nahin (1996), Mumbai Cutting (2011) – The segment “The ball”, Chameli (2003), Calcutta Mail (2003), Hazaaron Khwaishein Aisi (2005) and Main Zinda Hoon (1988).

 

Sudhir Mishra was born and brought up in Lucknow. He is the grandson of Dwarka Prasad Mishra, former chief minister of Madhya Pradesh. While he did his gradualtion in Delhi university, he formed a theatric group called Workshop Theatre and has worked with Badal Sircar. After 18 months, he joined Film and Television Institute of India, Pune. But he didn’t complete the course, but took lessons from his younger brother, Sudhanshu Mishra. He was married National award winning editor of Bollywood, Renu Saluja. After her death in 2000, he married Sushmita Mukherjee. But they have legally separated now.

 

In 1980, he reached Mumbai and worked as assistant director of Kundan Shah. He wrote the script of Jaane bhi do yaaron, a cult classic. In the series, he completed the script of two more critically well acclaimed movies - Saeed Akhtar Mirza’s Mohan Joshi Hazir Ho! And Vidhu Vinod Chopra in Khamosh. As a director his debut movie was Yeh Woh Manzil To Nahin in 1987 which won the National Film Award for Best First Film of a Director. Main Zinda Hoon (1988) won National Film Award for Best Film on Other Social Issues and Dharavi (1991) won National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Hindi. Hazaaron Khwaishein Aisi won him Filmfare awards for best story. Now he is working for the movie, Pehle Aap Janab, starring Amitabh Bachchan, Rishi Kapoor and Chitrangada Singh.
