Amitabh Bachchan Biography

Amitabh Bachchan is an Indian film actor who was very popular in the early 1970s in the Hindi film industry. He has won many major awards that include four National Film Awards and fourteen Filmfare Awards with 36 nominations. He is not only an actor but also a playback singer, film producer and television presenter. He served as the member of the Indian Parliament from 1984 to 1987.


He was born on 11th October 1942 in Allahabad in Uttar Pradesh. His parents are Dr. Harivansh Rai Bachchan and Teji Bachchan. His original name was Inquilaab. Later his name was changed to Amitabh meaning ‘the light never goes off’ as per the suggestions of the poet Sumitranandan Pant. His surname is Shrivastava but his father adopted the pen-name Bachchan. Amitabh Bachchan has one brother named Ajitabh.


Amitabh Bachchan studied at Jnana Prabodhini and Boy’s High School in Allahabad and attended Sherwood College at Nainital and studied arts. He studied at Kirori Mall College of University of Delhi and got his Bachelor of Science degree. He started his career as freight broker in a Calcutta based shipping firm, Bird and Co. Later he quitted his job to pursue his career in acting.


His debut film was as a voice narrator in the film, Bhuvan Shome in 1969. He showed his face in the film for the first time in Saat Hindustani and won the National Film Award for Best Newcomer. He then acted in Anand in 1971 and got his first Filmfare award in Best Supporting Actor category. He married actress Jaya Bhaduri and has two children, Shweta Nanda and Abhishek Bachchan. His son Abhishek married Aishwarya Rai.


He rose to stardom in 1970s and 1980s. He acted in many films like Majboor, Kunwara Baap, Dost, Namak Haraam, Chupke Chupke, Deewar, Amar Akbar Anthony, Kabhie Kabhie, Muqaddar Ka Sikander, Trishul, Kaala PAtthar, Silsila, Ram Balram, Shaan, Shakti, etc.


In 1984 he entered politics and contested in Allahabad seat of 8th Lok Sabha and won with 68.2% of the vote. However he resigned after three years. Later he joined Samajwadi Party and his wife became a Rajyasabha member of the party. Amitabh Bachchan has produced many films also. He started a company ABCL to produce films in the year 1996. He presented many television shows including Kaun Banega Crorepati. He became the first living Asian to have his wax statue in Madame Tussauds Wax Museum in 2000.
