S. M. Abdul Jabbar Biography

S. M. Abdul Jabbar is an award winning and leading journalist in Tamil Nadu, best known as radio broadcaster, cricket commentator and actor. He is a writer and columnist too. Literature, philosophy, religion and sports are his major fields of interest. His Tamil commentary for the television channels ESPN, Neo Sports, Sun TV and Zee TV has given him a celebrity status among media persoanlities and commentators. His name is always counted among the top radio artists of Tamil Nadu during the golden era of radio, just before television became popular. He has a fan base among Tamilians and Sri lankans in the 1990s.

 

His full name is Sathankulam. M. Abdul Jabbar. He was born on 26 June 1939 in Sathankulam, Tamil Nadu. He belonged to a middle class Muslim family and grew up in the small town of Sathankulam. For higher studies he moved to Sri Lanka, as he owned many relatives there. He completed his higher studies in the capital city and moved back following the political tensions and violence there.

 

During his younger days, he regularly listened to radio, the only medium of entertainment then. In those days Ceylon channel was also very famous, and he listened radio while at Sri Lanka too. He used to write letters to radio, and at one such occasion in 1979 he wrote that he was interested in cricket commentary in Tamil language. He was invited by radio station, and on experiment gave him an opportunity to do commentary work on ongoing Ranji cricket. His work was liked by the authorities, and very soon he found himself to land into the role of a sports commentator. He has also done Tamil programs for the Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation.
