Amit Varma Biography

Amit Varma is a well-known journalist and writer based in Mumbai. He is also a media and television personality. In his journalist career he has worked as a freelancer for many leading journals and newspapers such as The Guardian, The Wall Street Journal and Wisden Cricketers' Almanack. He also served as an editor and consultant for Cricinfo India. He is a recipient of 2007 Bastiat Prize for Journalism, and many other prestigious awards too. Writing novels has been his real passion and his first novel, My friend, Sancho was published in 2008.

 

Amit Varma hails from Mumbai, Maharashtra. He started his professional career as a blogger in 2004 before he turned a journalist and writer. He started the blog India Uncut, through which he wrote posts on general matters, public issues, current affairs etc, and his blog turned popular very soon. His name became a part of India's 50 Most Powerful People 2009 list by BusinessWeek magazine.

 

Since young Amit was an avid reader, and used to read Shakespeare works before he reached 10, which is indeed unique. His father had a huge collection of more than a thousand books which made him a reader at a very young age. He got into journalism accidentally and television industry in the 1990s. He used to work as a freelance writer for a few magazines in the late '90s, during his association with television.

 

He got a chance to work with Wisden (Cricketers' Almanack) in 2001, which marked his beginning in the field of journalism. After two years he became the managing editor of its Indian edition soon after Cricinfo was bought by the company in 2003. He was associated with the publishing house till 2006 before he quit his job to focus on his writing career.
