Vimla Patil Biography

Vimla Patil is an Indian journalist, writer and activist. She also writes columns for different forms of publications and has formerly served as the editor of Femina woman’s magazine. A multi-facet personality she is also an event designer. She currently served as a Board member of Tiger Watch NGO, Ranthambhore. She regularly writes a column - "Evesdropping" for New Woman Magazine on social issues and has edited "Fabulous Thali Meals By Chetana".

 

She was born and brought up in Mumbai, and she describes herself as ‘South Mumbai Woman’. She also got married and settled in Mumbai, and her career groomed here. Vimla Patil completed her journalism from London, and by that time she started working part-time as a journalist. Initially she worked as a part-time trainee at The Telegraph, followed by The Office Magazine. She returned to India in the late 1950s after which she embarked on a new journey in the field of journalism. She became an employee of Femina magazine, right from its beginning in 1959 and rose to important positions including editor. She was associated with the magazine for more than 4 decades, and has given important contributions in the growth of the magazine.

 

She was a part of Femina magazine when it initiated Miss India contest in the 1980s, which send models to participate in Miss World, Miss Universe and other elite international competitions. She served as the editor of Femina from 1959 to 1993, which gave the magazine a national identity among women’s magazines, and also its popularity through beauty pageants. Her daughter Monisha Patil was married to popular film and television actor Nitish Bharadwaj – Krishna of Mahabharata. The couple are divorced now and has two children.
