Cho Ramaswamy Biography

Cho Ramaswamy is a comedian, editor, playwright and lawyer in Tamil Nadu. His full name is Srinivasa Iyer Ramaswamy. His famous Tamil magazine is Thuglak. He is a witty figure in the Tamil Nadu and Indian politics. He was nominated to Rajya Sabha by K. R. Narayanan, the President of India at that time. President nominates 12 M.P.s who excel in the fields of art, social service or literature and he was one of them. He served as the member of the Rajya Sabha from November 1999 to November 2005.

 

Cho Ramaswamy was born on 5th October 1934 in Chennai. His father is R. Srinivasa Iyer and his mother is Rajammal. He broke away from G. K. Moopanar and joined M. Karunanidhi in the year 1996, but this relationship did not last long. The main reason for this is due to the release of ransom to sandalwood smuggler Veerappan to free Kannada actor Rajkumar. He is also a consumer activist helping the consumers to get their rights.

 

He started the magazine Thuglak in the year 1970. This is a political weekly magazine. He conveys his message to people through political satire. His drama Muhammed Bin Thuglak was staged more than 1000 times in which he brought out the hypocrisy and duplicity of politicians. He also criticized the emergency decree of Indira Gandhi and the attitude of Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh towards Pakistan. He played main role in bringing together Tamil Maanila Congress and DMK in 1996 election. In 2011 election he supported AIADMK. 

 

Some of his plays are Muhammed Bin Thuglak, Yaarukkum Vekamillai, Saathiram Sonnadhillai, Neram Urangum Neram, Saraswathiyin Selvan, Unmai Urangum Neram, Madras By Night, etc. Some of the films that he acted are Guru Sishyan, Moondrezhuthu, Adhisayappiravi, Manithan, Galaatta Kalyaanam, En Annan, Engal Thangam, Paar Magale Paar, Then Kinnam, etc. His religious works are Mahabaratham Pesugirathu, Valmiki Ramayanam, Nane Raja, Hindu Maha Samdram Volume I to VI, and Verukathagada Bramaniyam. 


Cho Ramaswamy, breathed his last at 4:15am on Dec 07, 2016 at Apollo Hospitals, where he was admitted. He is survived by his wife, a son and daughter.
