Gautam Navlakha Biography

Gautam Navlakha is a Delhi-based journalist, civil liberties, democratic and human rights activist, whose activism works are associated with People's Union for Democratic Rights, Delhi. He is also an editorial consultant of the Economic and Political Weekly. In 2018 he came into limelight after he was arrested by the Maharashtra police in connection with an alleged Maoist plot to assassinate Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He was one among the 5 activists who got arrested in connection with this incident, and his anticipatory bail plea was also rejected then.


Gautam Navlakha started his career as a journalist in Delhi, before he turned an activist. He has worked as a secretary of the People's Union for Democratic Rights, convener of the International People's Tribunal on Human Rights and Justice in Kashmir etc. Apart from Delhi, he has worked in Kashmir and areas in Chhattisgarh which are in the Maoists' influence. He had supported Prashant Bhushan's views that a referendum should take place on the subject of demilitarisation in Kashmir. He has been a columnist at Economic and Political Weekly and


In 2012 he has published one book titled Days and Nights in the Heartland of Rebellion. As an activist he has been associated with many controversies in the recent past. In May 2011, Gautam Navlakha was refused entry at the Srinagar Airport, as his presence could disturb peace and order in the Valley. He was prohibited from entering Kashmir under Section 144 of the CRPC. Jammu and Kashmir People's Democratic Party came out with protest for his detention. He was accused in the Elgaar Parishad case as well as for alleged links with the outlawed Communist Party of India (Maoist), most recently.
