Patricia Mukhim Biography

Patricia Mukhim is a well-known social activist, writer and journalist from Shillong, Meghalaya. She is a recipient of numerous awards and honours such as Padma Shri, Chameli Devi Jain Award, ONE India Award, UN Brahma Soldier of Humanity Award, FICCI FLO Award, Siva Prasad Barooah National Award and North East Excellence Award. She was given Padma Shri in the year 2000. Her writings on mining in Meghalaya and Khasi people of Meghalaya are her major contributions as a social activist. Mukhim is the director of Indigenous Women's Resource Centre, Shillong and is involved with activities of different organisations for a social cause. She took over the charge as the editor of Shillong Times, leading English daily in 2008 from Manas Chaudhuri.

 

Patricia Mukhim was born in Shillong. Her childhood was not so great, as her parents divorced when she was a child. Later she was brought up by her single mother. Her school and college studies were completed in the capital city of Shillong, before she started her career as a teacher. Later she turned to journalism in 1987 as a correspondent and currently fully involved with this profession, apart from social work. Mukhim is the founder of an NGO named Shillong, We Care which fights against the militancy in Meghalaya.

 

Patricia Mukhim is also a writer who wrote many columns on the socio-political milieu of Meghalaya. One of her articles is included in the book - Khasi matrilineal society - Challenges in the 21st century. She has attended many conferences and seminars across the world and has delivered keynote addresses. She is regular with TV and radio shows too. She was a member of Meghalaya Planning Board.
