Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra Biography

Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra is one among the gifted directors of Bollywood at present. He is a talented film maker known for movies like Rang de basanthi and Bhaag Mika Bhaag. His movie Bhaag Mika Bhaag is now running in full packed theatres at present. Bhaag Milkha Bhaag is an outstanding film with an incredible performance by Farhan Akhtar and its ratings are very high too. His venture ‘Rang de basanthi’ with Aamir playing the key role received an Oscar nomination in foreign film category though couldn’t win it. He is also the writer and director of the films Aks (2001) and Delhi-6 (2009). Though they were experiments, those attempts were not fruitful at box office and both failed terribly.

Mehra started his job by selling vacuum cleaners for Eureka Forbes. He established Flicks Motion Picture Company Private Limited in 1986. Thus he marked a new beginning as advertisement film maker. He has directed television commercials like Coke, Pepsi, Toyota, American Express and BPL. He has also directed the music video of Amitabh Bachchan – Aby baby. His first movie as a film maker was Aks, released in the year 2001. Though the movie was not a big success it was a critically well acclaimed movie, starring Amitabh Bachchan, Nandita Das and Raveena Tandon in leading roles.

His next movie titled Rang De Basanti was released in 2006 and starred Aamir Khan, Madhavan, Kunal Kapoor, Siddharth Narayan, Soha Ali Khan and British actress Alice Patten. This movie was a huge blockbuster and critical success. It accumulated many awards and nominations as well. He won Best Director awards at the 2006 Filmfare Awards and National Film Awards. Not only that, Rang de basanti was the original film entry in foreign film category at Oscar academy awards. He once said that vote-bank politics behind the introduction of the Mandal Commission by VP Singh inspired him to write the script of Rang de basanti.

His next movie was Delhi 6 starring Abhishek Bachchan and Sonam Kapoor in leading roles. But the confusing script was not enough to bring people to theatres. But, similar to Rang de basanthi, music of Delhi 6 also became huge hits and A.R.Rehman won Filmfare awards for both these movies. Bhag Mika Bhag is a biopic on the Indian athlete Mika Singh starring Farhan Aktar and Sonam Kapoor in leading roles.
