N. M. Mohan Biography

N. M. Mohan is an iconic personality in the field of Malayalam comics. He, in association with a few colleagues created the most popular comic character of Malayalam children stories – Mayavi. He also created the fictional characters like Luttappi for the same series for ‘Balarama’ Comics and several other fictional characters for children like Sootran. Both are nostalgic for the kids of 1980s and 1990s. He served as the editor of the Malayalam comics Poompatta and Balarama – the leading Malayalam comic magazines for children. Mohan was known as a comics’ writer, editor, magazine and advertisement designer, visualizer and architectural consultant. He was the son-in-law of famous Malayalam writer, Vaikom Chandrasekharan Nair, popularly called Vaikom.

 

He was born on 31 October 1949 in Pala, Kottayam. His college years were spent at St. Thomas College, Pala and NSS College, Changanassery. He was married to the daughter of Vaikom Chandrasekharan Nair, Latha. He started his professional career as a journalist in Chithrakarthika in Thiruvananthapuram, published by his father-in-law. Later he shifted to the most popular comics for kids – Poompatta, and later moved to Balarama, where he served as the Editor-in-Charge from 1983 to 2012, till his death. During these years he played a significant role in popularizing this child magazine among kids and thus increasing its circulation.

 

Balarama Digest, Balarama Amar Chitra Katha, Magic Pot and Tell Me Why are a few more publications of Balarama, which made this magazine indeed popular among millions of children. Mohan has played a significant role in initiating these sister publications as well. Pradeep Sathe, M. Mohandas and Simi Muhamma are the important personalities with whom he associated for his creative works. He stayed at his home in Nattassery after retirement. He passed away at the age of 63, following a heart attack.
