Jagat Narain Biography

Jagat Narain was the founder of the Hind Samachar group, freedom fighter and a Congress leader. He left studies in 1920 to join freedom struggle movement and got arrested. While in jail he acted as Lala Lajpat Rai's Personal Secretary. He has served jail for 9 years on different occasions and known as a great freedom fighter. He was shot dead on September 9, 1981, near Amaltas Motel on the national highway. According to White Paper issued by the government, Narain was assassinated because of his criticism of Bhindrawal. He was 81 then. A chair in the name of Narain was established at Kurukshetra University in 1998, to honour him.

 

In 1924 he became the editor of Bhai Parmanand's Weekly Hindi Paper Akashvani. Narain has served many decorative positions of Indian National Congress as a noted political leader. He served as the President of the Lahore City Congress Committee for seven years, leader of the Congress Party in the Lahore Corporation, a member of the Punjab Provincial Congress Committee and member of the All-India Congress Committee for about 30 years.

 

He was born in Lahore on 31st May 1899. He came to Jalandhar as a refugee and started an Urdu daily, Hind Samachar in 1948. Though Urdu language belonged to the Urban society of India post-independence, it didn’t receive government support or fund. Hindi, with Devanagari writings became popular in those days. In 1965, Jagat Narain founded Punjab Kesari, a Hindi daily. He was a member of Arya samaj and known as a prominent critic of Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale.

 

He was present during the occasion of clashes between Nirankaris and Akhand Kirtni Jatha Members. He stood witness at the Karnal Trial against Bhindrawale. Later in on September 9, 1981, he was shot dead while returning to Jalandhar from Patiala. It was stated that a person deeply involved in investigating criminal cases in Punjab has killed him.
