Hansal Mehta Biography

Hansal Mehta is a National award winning film director of Bollywood who shot to fame with 2013 release – Shahid – a biopic of a controversial figure, Shahid Azmi who was a well-renowned lawyer and activist most known for defending those wrongly accused in cases of terrorism. He received 2013 National Film Award for Best Direction for the movie and the movie also garnished numerous awards at different film award functions including National award for Best actor and Filmfare best actor award (Critics’ choice) for  Rajkummar Rao, who played the pivot role. Hansal’s much awaited project – ‘City Lights’ was released on 30th May, 2014 and received positive response from critics. The movie starred his previous hero, Rajkummar Rao aside newcomer Patralekha.

 

Mehta started his career in 1993, with TV cookery show, Khana Khazana. The show was hosted by Sanjeev Kapoor on Zee TV and was a grand success. The show was aired till 2000. Then he also directed a few short stories for Doordarshan before making his first full-length feature film in 1997 titled, “…Jayathe”. The movie went unnoticed. His second film was ‘Dil pe mat le yaar’ released in 2000 which starred Tabu and Manoj Bajpai in lead roles. The movie received bad reviews from critics and was a disaster, though it helped Mehta to remain in limelight for a while.

 

It was followed by a series of flops like Chaal, Woodstock Villa, Raakh and Anjaan. Youth oriented Yeh kya ho raha hai was a moderate hit. Woodstock Villa received good reviews from critics, but was a flop. He also directed the segment "High on the Highway" for the anthology movie, Dus Kahaniyaan. In 2013 he came to limelight with the biopic Shahid.
