Anurag Basu Biography

Anurag Basu is a very successful film maker of Bollywood famous for the themes of dark passion and adultery. He is the director of the movie ‘Murder’ with bold subject, starring Mallika Sherawat and Emraan Hashmi in the leading roles. He repeated Emraan Hashmi in one more movie filled with love and passion – Gangster. His movie Barfee has been nominated in Oscar awards and has received many awards as well. Other movies of Anurag Basu are Kites, Kuch to hai, Tumsa nahin dekha, Life in a metro and Saaya. He has directed only a few movies till now, but has been able to remain in limelight with each and every release. Anurag Basu has received multiple nominations and awards in many award functions and one among the most celebrated directors of Bollywood at present.

Basu made his directorial film debut in 2003 with the horror and suspense movie - Kucch To Hai with Tushar kapoor and Esha Deol in the leading roles. The movie was produced by Tushar Kapoor’s sister, Ekta Kapoor. The movie was moderate successful at box office. His second project was Saaya, staring John Abhraham, Tara Sharma and Mahima Chaudary in leading roles. Though the movie and its songs were noticed, it was blamed of taking the shots from original Hollywood movie itself. Murder was the third attempt of Basu. Despite being made in a low budget with new stars, Mallika Sherawat, Ashmit Patel and Emraan Hashmi the movie was the blockbuster of 2004. The movie was given ‘A’ certificate by censor board. But Mallika and Emraan became overnight sensations with this single movie. This movie was the biggest hit of 2004, marking a new beginning for Anurag basu’s career. Emraan has starred in Anurag Basu’s movies – Tumsa nahin dekha and Gangster later.

Success of Murder was followed by flop movie, Tumsa nahi dekha and critically well acclaimed movies – Gangster and Life in Metro. Both these movies accumulated critical appreciation as well as numerous awards, thus establishing the position of Basu as a celebrated personality. But much waited project of Hrithik Roshan and Bárbara Mori, ‘Kites’ failed terribly at box office due to its bad script. However he returned back with the best movie of his career, Barfi starring Ranbir Kapoor, Priyanka Chopra and Ileana D'Cruz in the leading roles.  The movie received Filmfare Award for Best Movie in the year 2012, along with numerous other awards. He has also received best screenplay award at Filmfare for Life in a metro.
