Viji Thampi Biography

Viji Thampi is a successful director of Malayalam cinema. He is the son in law of the Malayalam movie actor Jagannatha Varma. He has delivered numerous hit comic flicks during 90’s. However his career after 2000 has witnessed numerous flops and dragged projects like Nammal Thammil, Nadakame ulakam and April Fool. Apart from being a director, he has appeared onscreen in brief roles in a few movies of which most of them were directed by himself. A few of them include - Nagarathil Samsara Vishayam, Nagarangalil Chennu Raparkam, Pidakkozhi Koovunna Noottandu, Samaantharangal, Pacha kuthira, Krityam and Satyameva jayathe.

Director Renjith has written numerous scripts for Viji Thampi movies during 90’s, of which majority of them were success. Surprisingly Jayaram played leading role in all these movies. The movies are Witness (1988), New year and Kaalalpada (1989) and Nanma Niranjavan Srinivasan and Nagarangalil Chennu Raparkam (1990). In Kaloor Dennis’ script, he completed 6 movies in a row with Jayaram with the movie – Marupuram in 1990. He has successfully teamed up with comic star Jagdeesh as well which has delivered numerous comic hits of 90’s. The movies are Thiruthalvaadi, Kunukitta Kozhi and Pandu Pandoru Rajakumari, all released in the year 1992.

Viji Thampi started his directorial career directing David David Mr.David in 1988 which starred Balachandra Menon, Sumalatha and Karthika in lead roles. Before that he has appeared in Nedumudi Venu’s Achuvettante veedu. After that he teamed up with actor Jayaram and the then script writer Renjith to deliver a few noted movies during late 80’s and early 90’s.

A few of the most noted movies of Viji Thampi include – Sooryamanasam (1993) with Mammootty as leading actor and Addeham Enna Iddeham with Siddhique in leading role. Other major movies of 90’s include – Simhavalan Menon, Janam, Journalist, Pidakkozhi Koovunna Noottandu, Kudumbakodathi, Manthrika kuthira, Avittam Thirunaal Aarogya Sriman and Kunikkitta Kozhi. He was teamed up with Jayaram once again and they together delivered the comic flick ‘Naranath Thampuran’ in 2001. Other recent releases include – Bada dost, Chemistry and Nammil thammil.
