Sumalatha Biography

Sumalatha was a former actress of South Indian movies. She was most active during 1980’s and has worked in all the four south Indian languages. She has been successfully paired with Mammootty and Mohan Lal in numerous movies during 80’s of which Nirakoottu and New Delhi, opposite Mammooty and Thoovanathumbikal opposite Mohan lal are her best performances. Her role as ‘Clara’ in the movie Thoovanathumbikal is often regarded as the most memorable role of Sumalatha in Malayalam movies, and most recently Vanita Magazine’s viewers’ choose the role of Clara as one among the best 10 popular female roles of Malayalam till now. She was most popular in Malayalam movies. She is married to Kannada actor Ambarish and now, settled in Bangalore.

Suma Latha was born in Chennai. But she belongs to Telugu family. She won Andhra Pradesh beauty contest in 1979. This win gave her direct entry to movies. She debut silver screen with Kannada film Ravichandra opposite to Dr. Rajkumar at the age of 15. She was most successfully paired with Chiranjeevi in Telugu movies. She has also acted with Rajinikanth in a few Tamil movies like Murattu Kaalai and Kazhugu. She has acted opposite her husband Ambareesh in the movies - Aahuti, Avatara Purusha, Sri Manjunatha and Kallarali Hoovagi.  They fell in love on the film sets and later got married.

Among all languages, she was most successful in Malayalam. Everyone believes that she is a Keralite and it happened only due to her powerful performance and full justification to the roles she enacted with. Her most memorable performance is none other than Clara of Thuvanathumbikal. According to critics it’s the best movie ever made on Malayalam screen where rain has been assumed to be a silent character. Other roles include New Delhi, Nirakoottu, Thazhvaram, Isabella, Moorkhan, Kolilakkam, Thenum Vayambum, Purappadu, Unnikrishnante Adyathe Christmas, Nair Saab, Dhinarathrangal, David David Mr.David, Chakravalam Chuvannappol, Shyama and Parampara. She acted opposite Balachandra Menon in the movie Isabella.

She has also acted in a few Hindi movies like Mahanta, Dushman duniya ka and Aaj ka gunda raaj, though in character roles. She has also worked in movies of 80’s – Khaidi and Jackie. Sumalatha has received the best actress Nandi Award for her role in Shrutilayalu in 1987.her popular Kannada movies include - Aahuti, Avatara Purusha, Tayi Kanasu, Karna, Tayiya Hone, Kallarali Hoovagi and Ravichandra.
