Ratheesh Biography

Ratheesh was an actor of Malayalam cinema most popular during 80’s. He had acted in 158 films working under directors such as K. G. George, I. V. Sasi, Joshiy, P. G. Vishwambharan, Thampy Kannamthanam, and Shaji Kailas. He has played the roles of leading actor, supporting role as well as negative characters throughout his career. He debut Malayalam movies in the late 70’s. With the dawn of 80’s, he was at peak of his career till 1988 until new wave actors like Mammootty and Mohanlal gained momentum in film industry. As an actor, his most memorable roles are Uyarangalil, Abkari, Unaru, Ithraym Kaalam, Thandram, Akkachiyude Kunjuvava, Oru Mukham Pala Mukham, Ee Nadu, John Jaffer Janardhanan, Rajavinte Makan, Muhoortham 11.30, Sankharsham, Vazhiyorakazhchakal, Aayiram Kannukal, Innalenkil Nale and Ponthooval.

Ratheesh was born in Kalavoor of Alappuzha district of Kerala. He started his career in the Malayalam film Vezhambal in 1977. His big break to the industry was Ullkadal released in the year 1979. The movie was directed by K.G. George. After that, film industry witnessed the rise of a new star to the horizon. He became most popular as an action hero than romantic boy and in numerous multi star cast movies also, he has acted. Multi star cast movies was a trend of Malayalam movies during 80’s. During late 80’s he noticed his downfall of career graph and took break from the industry with the movie Iyyer the great (1990) where Mammootty played the leading role.

He returned back with a powerful role through Commissioner, directed by Shaji Kailas. This movie with Suresh Gopi (1994) in the lead was a record breaker breaking several records and it celebrated the return of Ratheesh in supporting role. Then he played a few more memorable roles in the movies - Kashmeeram, Nirnayam, Pidakkozhi Koovunna Noottandu, Kambolam, Cabinet, Yuvathurki, Ravanaprabhu, Danny, 19 April, and Gangothri. He has worked with Suresh Gopi in numerous action movies after his return. He passed away on 23 December 2002 at a comparatively younger age of 48.
