Shaji Kailas Biography

Shaji Kailas is an Indian film director mainly working in Malayalam film industry. He is notable for his hard hitting action films. He was born on 17th August 1965 in Vanchiyoor in Thiruvananthapuram in Kerala. His parents are Late Sivakumaran Nair and Janakiyamma. He attended Model Boys School and pursued his degree at Mahatma Gandhi College at Trivananthapuram. He worked in Shivan Studio during his college days. It was there that he contacted many film personalities.

 

After completing his studies he joined Balu Kiriyath in 1984 as the assistant director. He also worked with other directors like R. Sukumaran. He married Annie on 1st June 1996 and she changed her name to Chithra. She has acted in a film Rudraksham. They have three sons and living in Thiruvananthapuram.

 

His first film as a director was in the year 1989. The film was News by Jagadish, a thriller. His second film Sunday 7 PM was released in 1990 and was a failure. He directed Dr. Pasupathy written by Renji Panicker and this was a biggest grosser of the year. The combination of Shaji Kailas and Renji Panicker gave him several super hits. The films Souhrudam and Kilukkampetti were flops.

 

He got a break in 1992. His film Sthalathe Pradhana Payyans was a blockbuster. His film Commissioner in 1994 broke many records. Rudraksham was a box office bomber and it was during this film that he met his future wife Annie. In 1995 The King became one of the biggest hits in Malayalam film industry.

 

His film Narasimham and Valliettan were huge hits. The set back of Thandavam made him take a break from the cinema industry for a few years. He directed one Tamil film Jana. His Telugu debut was Vishnu. Both these films were commercial failure. The film The Tiger marked his reentry.

 

His films were known for their fiery dialogues. He is also criticized for using violence in the films. He is an ardent supporter of Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh and portrays Hindu images in his movies. He has won Best Director Award and Best Film Award in 1999 for his film Narasimham.
