Kalpana Iyer Biography

Kalpana Iyer was Miss Indian World 1978 and she represented India in Miss World contest and became a semi-finalist. She is also known as a film actress and television actress, most popular for negative roles. Chandrakanta is one such memorable television serials of her career where she played a negative shaded role. She has also appeared in numerous songs as a dancer of which Pardesi song of Raja Hindsutani needs special mention. She has also appeared in Satte Pe Satta (1982), Anjaam (1994and Hum Saath Saath Hain (1999). Popular Usha Uthup songs, "Hari om Hari" in Pyaara Dushman (1980) and "Rambha Ho" in Armaan (1982) were pictured on her. "Tu Mujhe Jaan" in Wardaat (1981) is another noted film of her career. ‘Tumhara Pyar Chahiye Mujhe Jeene Ke Liye’ is the most romantic song pictured on her.

Kalpana was born in 1955. She became first runner-up at Miss India in 1978 and represented India in 1978 Miss World beauty pageant where she placed as a top 15 semi-finalist. Though she couldn’t win any title, she provided her direct entry to Bollywood. In 1980 Bollywood movie Manokaamna, she was casted opposite Raj Kiran, of Karz fame. She played the role of poor girl, Gauri in this movie. Though the movie was a flop, Bappi Lahiri’s romantic track sung by himself, ‘Tumhara Pyar Chahiye Mujhe Jeene Ke Liye’ was a top song of the year. Later she moved to character and vamp roles. Thus she followed the tradition of item girls like Bindu, Helen and Aruna Irani. Yet she was one of the top item girls of 1980’s.

During 1990’s, she got one of the memorable character roles of her career. She was critically acclaimed for her performance as a prison warden in Anjaam who was dragged to death by Madhuri. She has also done a few television serials of which Chandrakanta needs special mention. She has also performed as a singer/dancer in many live shows.
