Amrita Rao Biography

Amrita Rao is an Indian actress and model appearing in Hindi film industry. She started her career as a model and made her acting debut in 2002 in the film Ab Ke Baras. She acted in the romantic film Ishq Vishk by Ghosh by in 2003 and was nominated in the Filmfare in the Best Female Debut category.

She was born on 17^th June 1981 in Mumbai in Chitrapur Saraswat Brahmin family. Her mother tongue is Konkani. She could speak Marathi, Hindi, English and Konkani languages. She studied at Canossa Convent Girls High School at Mumbai and joined Sophia College to get a degree in psychology. She has one younger sister Preetika Rao who is also a model and South Indian film actress.

When she was studying at Sophia College she appeared in the advertisement of Fairever Face cream. She also appeared in other television commercials such as Cadbury’s Perk Karwa Chaut and Bru Coffee and this attracted the attention of the film directors who gave her offers to act in films.

After her acting debut in Ab Ke Barasi in 2002, she was portrayed as Payal in film Ishq Vishkin 2003. She also acted in many other films like Masti in 2004, Main Hoon Na, Deewar in 2004, Vaah! Life Ho To Aisi in 2005, Shikhar in 2005 and Pyare Mohan in 2006. She was starred in the blockbuster of Sooraj R. Barjatya, Vivah with Shahid Kapoor.

Her Telugu debut was Athidhi opposite Mahesh Babu. Her films My Name is Anthony Gonsalves and Welcome to Sajjanpur are released in 2008. In 2009, her releases are Victory and Shortkut.

She was nominated in 2004 for Filmfare Best Female Debut Award for the film Ishq Vishk, and in 2005 for Filmfare Best Supporting Actress award for the film Main Hoon Na. She was nominated four times for Star Screen Awards in 2003, 2004 and 2007 for her films Ab Ke Bara, Ishq Vishk and Vivah. She has won International Indian Film Academy Awards and Stardust Awards.
