Bindu has been one of the top vamps and cabaret dancers of Bollywood screen. After Helen, she was the most sought cabaret artist for movies during 1960’s and 1970’s. Yet through the supporting role in Abhimaan as Amitabh Bachchan’s girl friend, she proved that she is also a talented actress. Her role of a vamp in Rajesh KhannaAsha parekh starrer Kati patang also needs special mention. She has received Filmfare nomination for Best Supporting Actress for seven times. But unfortunately she couldn’t receive it at least once. Those memorable roles include - Ittefaq (1969), Do Raaste (1970), Dastaan (1972), Abhimaan (1973), Hawas (1974), Imtihan (1974) and Arjun Pandit (1976). She has mostly appeared in supporting roles in Hindi movies. She is married to her childhood friend, Champaklal Zaveri and the couple has no children.

Bindu was born to film producer Nanubhai Desai and his wife Jyotsna in Valsad, Gujarat in 1951. Her father died when she was 3. Being the eldest daughter of the family, she had lot of responsibilities. One of her earliest works is Anpadh in 1962. Later she appeared in Aurat (1967), Aya Sawan Jhoom Ke (1969) and Doli (1969). Her negative role in Kati patang was her big break to the industry. Sizzling cabaret dance, "Mera Naam Shabnam" is still remembered as her best dance number. After that she got numerous roles of similar shades – Vamp cum dancer. It was Hrishikesh Mukherjee movie Swabhimaan that broke the myth. Her deglamourised role of wife to Ashok Kumar, in yet another Hrishikesh Mukherjee movie - Arjun Pandit proved it once again that she is a talented actress. She won Filmfare nominations too, for both these roles.

Along with Helen and Aruna Irani, Bindu defined the Bollywood 'cabaret' dance number and the role of the 'Vamp’ in the Bollywood movies during the era of 1960’s and 1970’s. A few of her noted movies later include - Shola Aur Shabnam, Hero, Hum Aapke Hain Koun..!, Main Hoon Na, Om Shanti Om, Biwi Ho To Aisi and Kishen Kanhaiya. Her movies during 1990’s and later portrayed her comic abilities most.
