Gita Gopinath Biography 
Gita Gopinath is an economist from Mysore, Karnataka. On 1st October 2018, it created a lot of buzz when she was appointed as the Chief Economist of The International Monetary Fund. She has been serving as the Economic Adviser to the Chief Minister of Kerala. She is John Zwaanstra Professor of International Studies and Economics at Harvard University. She holds a PhD from Princeton University, New Jersey, and she is an expertise of International Finance and Macroeconomics, the subjects which she focuses on her research works right now.
Gita Gopinath was born in Mysore, Karnataka on 8 December 1971. She was born to T V Gopinath and V C Vijayalakshmi. She has one elder sister. Both her parents have links to some of the prominent communist leaders of Kerala, like A. K. Gopalan, TC Narayanan Nambiar etc. Gita completed her graduation and MBA from colleges affiliated to Delhi University. She moved to US for her advanced studies. She completed her research works in 2001. Kenneth Rogoff, Ben Bernanke and Pierre-Olivier Gourinchas were her Doctoral advisors.
She is married to Iqbal Singh Dhaliwal, Executive Director at Abdul Latif Jameel Poverty Action Lab at Department of Economics, Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Gita Gopinath has been serving as Professor of Harvard University, when she was appointed as the Chief Economist of The International Monetary Fund in October 2018. Currently she is one among world’s outstanding economists.
She has earlier served as a member of “eminent persons advisory group” on G20 matters for India’s finance ministry. In 2018, she was elected a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. Last year, in an interview, she remarked that demonetization by Narendra Modi was not a good idea. Currently she is a US citizen.
