Urjit Patel Biography
Urjit Patel is an Indian economist, who succeeded Raghuram Rajan as 24th Governor of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI). He took charge as RBI governor on 4 September 2016 and resigned this post on 10 December 2018. Prior to appointment in this elite post, he served as RBI deputy governor. Right to Information, monetary policy, economic policy research, statistics and information management, deposit insurance and communication were the areas he looked into, while serving as RBI deputy governor. His term as RBI governor ends on September 2019. But he resigned the post in December 2018, thus becoming the first governor after 1990s to resign from his post before term ends. He resigned the post citing personal reasons.
Urjit Patel was born in Nairobi on 28 October 1963 to Manjula and Ravindra Patel. His full name is Urjit Ravindra Patel. He held Kenyan citizenship till 2013, after which he became an Indian citizen. His grandfather migrated to Kenya long before Urjit was born. Urjit is married and has no kids. Urjit Patel completed his studies in economics from London School of Economics and Oxford University. Later he took doctorate in Economics from Yale University in 1990. Patel joined the International Monetary Fund same year and worked in many countries including India. He was at IMF India desk during the 1991–94 transition period, after which he was posted to IMF country mission in India during the period 1992–95.
He went on deputation from the IMF to the Reserve Bank of India and since then works in India. He has played the role of advisor for many years, and also a consultant to government of India. He worked with several High-Level Committees and then served on the board of Gujarat State Petroleum Corporation in 2006-07. He was appointed as Deputy Governor at RBI in 2013.
