Krishna Bharadwaj Biography

Krishna Bharadwaj was a Neo-Ricardian economist mainly known for her contributions to the economic development theory and the revival of the ideas of classical economics. Krishna hailed from Karnataka. She has published many works and papers related to the topic of economy. She also contributed to journals. She held the Chair of Economics at Jawaharlal Nehru University. Her daughter Sudha Bharadwaj is a human rights lawyer, trade unionist and civil rights activist who protests against land acquisition and denial of rights of labourers.

 

Krishna Bharadwaj was born in Karwar, Karnataka in the year 1935. Her father M.S Chandravarkar worked as a teacher in local college, and her mother was a homemaker. She had 5 elder siblings. When she was four years old, her family shifted to Belgium where they got settled. Krishna had her initial education there. She also learnt Hindustani classical music and performed in concerts during her teens. Following her father’s death in 1952, the family shifted to Mumbai, where she completed her graduation.

 

She married Ranganath Bharadwaj and moved to US. Both of them pursued their PhD in Massachusetts Institute of Technology, US. She completed a Ph.D in Transport Economics in 1960 in US. Her daughter Sudha Bharadwaj was born in US, and also owned US citizenship. When Sudha turned 11, the family moved back to India, where she continued with her professional career and research works on economics.

 

When Piero Sraffa's Production of Commodities was published by Means of Commodities in 1960, she was asked by the then editor Sachin Chaudhuri of Economic Weekly to review the book, which she completed brilliantly. She joined the Center for International Studies in 1961, and then moved to Cambridge as a visiting fellow in 1967. Later she got associated with JNU on her return. She passed away on 8 March 1992, aged only 56.
