Sumita Sanyal Biography

Sumita Sanyal is a Bengali actress who has acted in a few Bollywood movies as well. She is remembered most for the lead actress role in Hrishikesh Mukherjee’s 1971 movie Anand, where she was paired aside Amitabh Bachchan. She played the role of Renu who emotionally gets attached to Rajesh Khanna like her elder brother. She has also acted in many television serials as well as theatre plays and she is a professional stage actress too. Aashirwad (1968), Guddi (1971) and Mere Apne (1971) are her other noted Bollywood movies in which she played lead and supporting roles. She was married to the film editor, Subodh Roy and the couple had one son.

Sumita Sanyal was born as Manjula Sanyal in 9 October 1945 in Darjiling, West Bengal. Sumita’s father was Girija Golkunda Sanyal. Her name was changed to Suchorita by the director Bibhuti Laha for his film “Khokhababur Pratyabartan”. But later the same director shortened the name to Sumitra. It was the famous actress Lila Desai who introduced her to film world through the Bengali movie, Agradoot. “Khokababur Pratyabartan” was one of her earliest noted roles. She played lead role opposite Dilip Kumar in Bengali movie - “Sagina Mahato. Later, she appeared most in character roles. She has long term association with theater and is most known as stage actress of “Ranga Sabha”.

She has acted in more than 40 Bengali movies including Khoka babur pratyabartan, Akashpradip, Teen bhubhaner parey, Maya, Sagina Mahato, Nishachar, Anya mati anya rang, Kuheli, Natun surya, Jiban niye, Jawab, Srimati, Kanchankanya, Deya neya , Kalsrot,  Pratham prem, Ek i ange eto rup, Surer agun, Kal tumi aleya, Ashru diye lekha, Harano prem, Hathat dekha, Panchasar, Apanjan, Dinanter alo, Trishna, Chena achene, Chiradiner and Nayak.
