Dilip Kumar Biography

Dilip Kumar is an Indian actor and served as a member of Indian Parliament. He was the first one to receive the Filmfare Award for Best Actor and enjoys the name of having won this most number of times.

He was born to Lala Ghulam Sarwar on 11th December 1922 at Peshawar to a Peshawari family with twelve children. His father was a fruit merchant there and later when the family moved to Pune, he started a canteen business and was a supplier of dried fruits. He entered the film industry in 1944. At his age of 44 he married the beauty queen Saira Banu. The younger brother of Nasir Khan was also an actor. His second marriage with Asma was a failure.

The actress Devikarani helped his entry into the Bollywood film industry. The name Dilip Kumar was assigned to him by the Hindi author Bhagwati Charan Varma. His first hit film was Jugnu in 1947. He produced his only film Ganga Jamuna in 1961. He took a hiatus of five years from film industry from 1976 to 1981. Then he returned back to play character roles. Some of the films that he acted are Sabnam, Deedar, Babul, Kohinoor, Madhumati, Ram Aur Shyam, Kranti, Vidhaata, Duniya, Mughal E Azam, Karma, Shakthi, Qila, etc. His last film Qila released in 1998 was unsuccessful.

Dilip Kumar strived to bring the people of India and Pakistan closer to one another. He was elected for the upper house of the Parliament in the year 2000. He was given Dadashaheb Phalke Award in the year 1994. The highest civilian award of Pakistan Nishan e Pakistan award was conferred on him by Pakistan government. When he was asked to return the award by Shiv Sena and Bal Thackeray during Kargil War, he refused to do so.

He got Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award in 1993, Padma Bhushan in 1997, NTR National Award in 1997, CNN-IBN Indian of the Year – Lifetime Achievement Award in 2009. He lives in Pali Hills in Mumbai suburban region.
