Sonu Walia Biography

Sonu Walia is a former model and Bollywood actress. Walia won the Miss India contest in 1985 and went on to compete in Miss Universe 1985. She handed over her Miss India crown to Juhi Chawla the following year. As a film actress, she is known for her negative shaded role in Rekha starrer, Khoon Bhari Maang. She played Aarti's best friend Nandini who later betrays her. She won the Filmfare Best Supporting Actress Award for the same role. She has been known for her glamorous roles and bold sequences during the era of 1980’s. Khoon bhari maang is the best instance. She has also appeared in a few ads and television serials during 1990’s. Betaal Pachisi is her most popular television serial. She has appeared in a dance number of south Indian blockbuster – Thalapathi where Rajinikanth and Mammootty worked together for the first time. The chartbuster song was Raakkamma Kaiye thattu composed by Ilaiyaraaja.  

Sonu was born on February 19, 1964 in Delhi. Walia won the Miss India contest in 1985 and entered Bollywood. 1986 movie, Shart as a model was her first movie. Two years later, negative shaded supporting role in Khoon Bhari Maang gave her big break to Bollywood. 1988 movie Aakarshan is remembered for her bold sequences and thus she became a glamour doll in Bollywood. Later too, she appeared mostly in the form of glamour girl. As an actress, she couldn’t win meaty roles in Bollywood.

Later she appeared in Bollywood movies like - Apna Desh Paraye Log, Hatim tai, teja, Rupaye Dus Karod, Swarg jaisa ghar, sahibaan, Nischay, Kasam, fauji, Yash, Agneekaal, Toofan, Mahadev and Mahasangram. In majority of these movies, her roles were either short or supporting ones. She is married to Surya Prakash Singh, an NRI based in the US. Now she is back with directorial venture of her husband.
