Rajinikanth Biography

Rajinikanth is a South Indian film actor often called as Super Star. He was born on 12th December 1950 in Bangalore. His original name was Shivaji Rao Gaikwad. His father is Ramoji Rao Gaekwad and mother is Jijabai. His mother tongue is Marathi, but he amassed great victory in Tamil film industry. Apoorva Raagangal in 1975 was his debut film in Tamil. After playing the antagonistic characters in few films he rose to the status of Super Star. He got lots of fans for his mannerism and style.

Rajinikanth is the youngest of two brothers and one sister. His mother died at the age of 5 and his childhood days were marked with poverty and hardships. He worked as a bus conductor in Bangalore. His performance in the stage plays made director K. Balachander bring him into the film industry. After his first film in Tamil, he did his Kannada film Katha Sangama, Anthuleni Katha and Aval Oru Thodar Kathai in which he performed negative role. Some of the films that gave him a breakthrough are Bairavi, Mullum Malarum, Murattu kaalai, Pokkiri Raja, Naan Sigappu Manithan, Padikkaadhavan, Dharmathin Tahalaivan, Nallavanukku Nallavan, etc. Commercial stardom was bestowed on him in the decade 1991 to 2001 when he captivated the hearts of people through his famous films, Thalapathi, Valli, Arunachalam, Padayappa, Muthu, etc.

He married Latha Rangachari on 26th February, 1981. His two daughters are Aishwarya and Soundarya. Aishwarya married actor Dhanush and have two sons, Soundarya married the industrialist Ashwin Ramkumar. He has strong belief for spirituality and he enjoys books on Hinduism and spiritualism.

After a short gap, he starred in Baba in the year 2002. This fell short of all expectations and he had to repay the losses to the distributors. He saw his resurgence again by his film Chandramukhi which saw huge victory and dubbed in many world languages. He worked again with S. Shankar for the film Enthiran, the most expensive film ever made in India. This is the highest grossing film and the science fiction of the movie gained it huge success.

He was influenced by politics and supported Indian National Congress. Later he supported DMK. He is a philanthropist and undertook daylong fast to protest Karnataka government in Kaveri River water issue. There were continuous speculations about his entry into politics, but he did not show interest in this.

He suffered from minor respiratory and gastrointestinal problems that made him get admitted in the hospital in May 2011. After spending few days in the intensive care unit, he returned back. He had to undergo temporary dialysis and he went to Singapore to take further treatment.

Rajinikanth and Tamil Nadu politics

In no less than a vote appeal he also sought the support of his fans saying, "I will call you when there's a war. You come then. In the old days all men would go when there was a war."

Rajinikanth assessed that Tamil Nadu has good leaders - MK Stalin of the DMK and Anbumani Ramadoss got a special mention from the mega star - but said that the "system is rotten. We should change the system."

In Tamil Nadu, his millions of adoring fans say Rajinikanth is the only one who can fill a political vacuum created by the death of former chief minister J Jayalalithaa of the AIADMK and the frail health of her 94-year-old arch rival M Karunanidhi of the DMK.

Waiting to welcome Rajini into politics, and in the party too if he so pleases said a senior leader, is the BJP, which aims to quickly expand its influence in the state. Rajinikanth has not said yes. But he has not said no either. There has been buzz since earlier this year that Rajinikanth could launch his own party with the support of the BJP. He has praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who met the actor at his Poes Garden residence in Chennai when he visited the Tamil Nadu capital in 2014. The renewed frenzy over whether the star will join politics began earlier this week when he said on the first day of his meeting with fans, held after eight years, that he has no political aspirations, but "If God wills it, I will enter politics tomorrow."

It's happened before. In 1996 when Rajinikanth asked people not to vote for Ms Jayalalithaa, his fans thought an announcement on entering politics would follow. His campaign is seen to have cost the AIADMK that year's assembly elections, with a DMK-led coalition winning.

But Rajini steered clear of politics, though he complains that his name has been misused by politicians and he is forced to make clear before every election that he is not joining some party or the other.

Even his films were watched closely for hints, like Baba in 2002, in which he played a carefree atheist who turns a believer and bats for an honest politician. When the man is killed, the protagonist approaches the people.

Twice his supporters have attempted to float parties to pressure their idol into entering politics. It is not uncommon for his fans across the state to frequently put up posters urging him to come and "lead" and "save" Tamil Nadu.

Other political parties have wooed him too. Only the AIADMK has stayed away, though Rajinikanth's relationship with Ms Jayalalithaa, his Poes Garden neighbour, had improved. At a condolence meeting after her death in December last,  he rued that he had "hurt" her two decades ago.

My job is acting and I am going now to take care of my work. What you are doing is your work and let me do mine,'' he said.

That clinical devotion to the call sheet would seem to suggest that all the talk about a real life political role for Rajinikanth is much ado about nothing. But away from the public glare, information is trickling in about work happening to facilitate a political launch for the Superstar.

Sources indicate that at the Rajinikanth end, his wife Latha is the pointsperson setting up the back office. Before the superstar left for Mumbai, phones were worked to set up meetings with people from all walks of life, where Rajini popped the question if he would be taking the right decision by jumping into politics and heard different points of view.

Rajinikanth is Really Fond of his 'Mappillai' Dhanush

With advice coming from a Chennai-based editor, the decks, it would seem, are being cleared for a political plunge once Rajinikanth is through with the shooting part for Kaala. 40 per cent of the movie, being produced by son-in-law Dhanush is being shot in Mumbai and the remaining part will be shot at a Dharavi set that is erected in Chennai.

There is buzz about an August 15 launch though there is no official confirmation on the date.

Sources in Chennai and Delhi suggest that barring last minute jitters and change of plan, it is almost certain that Rajini will float his own political outfit. He has been advised by top politicians, including in the BJP, that joining the saffron party will not be politically prudent. Rajini's party will then have a pre-poll alliance with the BJP and the Panneerselvam faction of the AIADMK. Given Vijaykanth's equation with Rajini, the two actors could come together as well in the hope of producing a political blockbuster.

The BJP got only 2.8 per cent vote in the assembly elections last year while the DMDK fared worse with 2.4 per cent. The expectation is that Rajini will play a pinch-hitter role and bring at least 12 to 15 per cent vote to the kitty. If OPS is able to take away a significant chunk of the AIADMK vote, the rainbow coalition should be able to beat the DMK-Congress alliance that garnered 37 per cent in 2016. It could do even better if the Sasikala-Palaniswami camp comes a cropper and that vote shifts to Rajinikanth.

Rajinikanth on Sunday, December 31, 2017 announced his plan to enter politics and said he would float his own party.
