Shoma Anand Biography

Shoma Anand is a noted film and television actress. She entered Bollywood in the late 1970’s doing lead roles and later moved to character roles. She occasionally plays comic roles in movies right now and is a household name for television viewers. She shot to fame with the highly popular Hindi sitcom Hum Paanch on Doordarshan. Dekh Bhai Dekh and Hum Panchi Ek Daal ke are other popular Doordarshan television serials. TV Soap, Bhabhi was another noticed work and she is most known for portraying mother roles. Kal Ho Naa Ho, Kyaa Kool Hai Hum and Hungama are her noted comic roles of Bollywood in the recent times.

Shoma Anand was born on 16 February 1958. She made her film debut through 1976 movie Barood where she played second lead aside Rishi Kapoor and Reena Roy. Patita, Jagir and Coolie are among her noted works. However after her marriage with producer-director Tariq Shah in 1987, she got less support to act in movies and hence she took a break from the industry. Then she re-entered through television series, Hum paanch which shot her to instant fame. She returned back to big screen in the 1990’s where she played the minor roles of doctor, sister, cousin etc.

However her role in Priyadarshan’s Hungama gained him huge appreciation as well as a Filmfare nomination for best comedian. Hungama is the Hindi remake of Priyadarshan’s own Malayalam comedy, Poochakkoru Mookkuthi of 1980’s, where Shoma played the role of traditional housewife turned ultra-modern middle aged woman. This challenging role was originally played by veteran actress Sukumari and the role gave her enough opportunity to expose her acting skills. After this movie, she got many offers from Bollywood industry. The television series Shanno Ki Shaadi is known for her comic performance.
