Priyadarshan Biography

Priyadarshan is an Indian film director and a producer who has been in the film industry for more than three decades. He has acted and directed the films of various languages like Tamil, Hindi, Malayalam and Telugu and primarily concentrates in Hindi film industry though his career began in Malayalam cinema.

Priyadarshan was born on 30th January 1957 in Thiruvananthapuram in Kerala. His full name is Soman Priyadarshan Nair. His father’s name is K. Soman Nair and his mother’s name is Rajamma. He completed his schooling at Government Model School and joined the University College at Thiruvananthapuram and completed his masters’ degree in psychology. He married the former actress Lissy. The popular actor Mohanlal was the friend and through him he got some chances to work as scriptwriter.

In 1984, he made his directorial debut through the film Poochakkoru Mookkuthi and though this was a low budget film, it turned to be a great success and was welcomed for its comedy track. The year 1988 was a turning point in his life and he directed many hit films including Vellanakalude Nadu, Chithram, and Aryan.

His debut movie in Tamil was Gopura Vasalile in 1991 and in Telugu was Nimmayam in 1992. His movies Abhimanyu in 1991, Advaitham in 1992 and Thenmavin Kombathu in 1994 also were very successful. His first movie in Bollywood was Muskurahat which was a big flop. Then the film Gardish in 1993 gave him a good opening in Hindi. His dream film about the Indian freedom struggle Kalapani was a mega hit and took him to great heights.

Some other films that he has directed include Kamaal Dhamaal Malamaal, Arabeem Ottakom P. Madhavan Nayarum in Oru Marubhoomikkadha, Aakrosh, Bumm Bumm Bole, Khatta Meeta, De Dana Dan, Billu, Kanchivaram, Bhool Bhulaiyaa, Dhol, Chup Chup Ke, Malamaal Weekly, Bhagam Bhag, Kyon Ki, Vettam, Hungama, Laysa Laysa, Kilichundan Mampazham, Kalapani, Chandralekha, Gandeevam, Thenmavin Kombath, Thalavattam, Dheem Tharikida Thom, etc.

He has won several awards and honors for his performance. However he was heavily criticized for plagiarism. His film Thalavattam was supposed to be based on the film One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest in English, Vandanam based on Stakeout, Kakkakuyil based on A Fish Called Wanda and Garam Masala based on Boeing Boeing. In spite of these accusations many of his Malayalam movies that turned out to be super hits were original.
