Reena Roy Biography

Reena Roy is counted among the most versatile actresses of 1980’s. She decorated equal position with leading ladies of B’town – Rekha, Parwin Babi, Hema Malini and Zeenat Aman during 1980’s and was everyone’s hot favourite. She has acted with almost all stars that time of which her pairing with Shatrughan Sinha was most successful. She has given box office hits with Kamal Hassan, Amitabh Bachchan and Jeetendra.

Reena Roy entered acting world to financially support her family. Her parents got divorced and when circumstances occurred to take care of her mother and 3 siblings, she acted in a few B Grade movies aside unknown actors during early 70’s. But through her hard work and talented, she established her name among the most sought actresses of early 80’s aside Rekha and Zeenat Aman. She was versatile and was flexible to handle the roles from a traditional village girl to a modern college girl and from a professional dancer to a simple house wife. Throughout her career she got many opportunities to work in women-centric roles of which Aasha, Ladies’ tailor, Jaani Dushman, Nagin and Apnapan need special mention. She has shown her range of dancing talent from classical art forms to disco dances through the songs of Rocky to Disco station of Hathkadi.

Her debut movie opposite Dany Denzopia during early 70’s was shelved due to some reason and Zaroorat opposite Vijay Arora is considered as her debut movie. The movie was successful, yet she struggled to get good roles. She then did a few B grade movies till Jaisa to Taisa opposite Jeetendra was released in the year 1973. The song ‘Ab ke sawan’ was quite popular that time. But the surprise hit of Kalicharan – the debut movie of Subhash Ghai as a director was enough to place her among ‘the most wanted’ list. The movie was an experiment of an actor as a director, casting the villain Shatrughan Sinha in leading role opposite Reena Roy. After that she didn’t look back and has given numerous hits to Bollywood during 1970’s and 80’s.

When she got married in 1983, she was at the peak of her career. She quit industry but got separated from her spouse Pakistani cricketer Mohsin Khan. During 90’s and early 2000’s, she has done a few roles including Refugee and aadmi Khilouna hai.

Now a small note on other notable works – Zakmee, Zamanat, Badalthe rishte, Asha, Jagruthi, Sanam teri kasam, Apnapan, Viswanath, Muquabla and Sau din saas ki. She has won Filmfare supporting actress once for her role in Apnapan and has been nominated twice for best actress – Asha and Nagin, though she couldn’t win it.
