Satyendra Prasanna Sinha Biography

Satyendra Prasanna Sinha, 1st Baron Sinha, was a prominent lawyer and statesman in British India, who lived during the period, 1863 – 1928. Despite being an Indian, he decorated some of the prominent administrative positions in British ruled India. He was the first Governor of Bihar and Orissa, first Indian to become a member of the Viceroy’s Council and also the British ministry. He also served as the first Indian Advocate-General of Bengal. His name is also referred to as Satyendra Prasad Sinha. He was also associated with Indian National Congress and served as President of the Indian National Congress during 1915 – 1916.

 

Sinha was born into a Zamindar family on 24 March 1863 in Raipur, Birbhum in Bengal Presidency. He completed his schooling from Birbhum Zilla School at Suri, and later studied from Presidency College, Calcutta. He completed his law studies from London and won the Lincoln's Inn scholarship of 100 dollars for three years. Once he returned to India in 1886, he started his legal practice. He became Standing Counsel to the Government of India in 1903 and very soon became one of the top lawyers from Bengal.

 

He became the first Indian to enter the Viceroy's Executive Council in 1909. On 1 January 1915, he received knighthood and the same year he served as the president of INC at Mumbai Session. In 1917 he moved to England, and once he returned to India three years later, he was appointed as the first governor of the Province of Bihar and Orissa. Following bad health, he couldn’t complete one year in this post. He joined the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council in London in 1926, but returned to India following bad health. He died 2 years later at Berhampore.
