Nittoor Srinivasa Rau Biography

Nittoor Srinivasa Rau was the Chief Justice of the High Court of Mysore State during 29 March 1962 – 7 August 1963. He was also a freedom fighter, Gandhian and writer, who is credited as the first Kannada writer to translate Mahatma Gandhi's autobiography to the Kannada language. He was also the first chief of the Central Vigilance Commission of India. C. K. Nagaraja Rao, writer and theatre personality from the state of Karnataka was his nephew. He once served as the acting Governor of the Mysore state. He was a member of the Kannada Sahitya Parishat since 1922.

 

Nittoor Srinivasa Rau’s name is also spelled as Nittur Srinivasa Rao. He was born on 24 August 1903 in Bangalore into a family of intellectuals. His ancestors hail from village of Nittoor in Gubbi Taluka of Tumkur district. Most of his family members added ‘Nittoor’ tag to their names, representing their ancestral village. His father Nittoor Shamann was a school teacher. His maternal uncle M. N. Krishna Rao served as acting Diwan of Mysore for a few days in 1941. As per old Indian traditions, he married a 10-year old girl at the age of 14. She was the daughter of his uncle M. N. Krishna Rao. The couple had 4 children.

 

Nittoor Srinivasa Rau’s schooling was done at Hosadurga, Challakere and Shimoga. He completed his law studies from Madras Law College in 1927. Rau returned to Bangalore and started his career as a lawyer. He was appointed as the Advocate General of the Mysore state by the Chief Minister, Kengal Hanumanthaiah in 1953. In 1961 he was appointed as the Chief Justice of the Karnataka High Court. During his later years he was involved with the activities of the Gokhale institute. He passed away just a few days before his 101th birthday.
