Pratibha Patil Biography

Pratibha Patil is the 12th President of India and the first woman to hold the office. She succeeded Dr. A. P. J. Abdul Kalam and became the President of India on 25th July 2007. She is one of the members of the Indian National Congress and nominated for this post by the ruling United Progressive Alliance party and Indian Left.

 

She was born on 19th December 1934. She started her career as a lawyer at Jalgaon District Court and involved in various social activities for the upliftment of poor women. She contested in the election for the first time at the age of 27. She was elected for four times continuously for Muktainagar, Maharashtra as the member of the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly in the time period of 1962 to 1985. From 1985 to 1991 she served as the Member of the Parliament in the Rajya Sabha. He represented Amravati Constituency in the tenth Lok Sabha elections held in 1991. She did not lose even a single election that she contested.

 

She was the 24th Governor of Rajasthan in the years from 2004 to 2007. She was nominated for President Election on 14th June 2007 and her loyalty to Nehru family was the main reason for her nomination. The first job she did as a President was to make the National Rural Employment Guarantee Act. She did not want to be a rubber stamp president. She had to face Bhairon Singh Shekhawat in a straight contest for the President election. The presidential election was conducted on 19th July 2007 and she took office as India’s first woman president on 25th July 2007.

 

She set up Vidya Bharati Shikshan Prasarak Mandal the educational institute that runs schools and colleges in Amravati, Jalgaon and Mumbai. She set up Shram Sadhana Trust that runs working women’s hostel in New Delhi, Mumbai and Pune and an engineering college in Jalgaon. The cooperative sugar factory, Sant Muktabai Sahakari Sakhar Karkhana was founded by her at Muktainagar. A cooperative bank was named after her as Pratibha Mahila Sahakari Bank.
