S. Muthiah Biography

S. Muthiah is an Indian author, historian and journalist from Chennai, Tamil Nadu. He is the founder of the fortnightly newspaper Madras Musings and founder-President of the Madras Book Club. He also organizes annual Madras Day celebrations every year. He is best known as a historian and heritage activist, who conducts research works on ancient Chennai and publishes them. His works on political and cultural history of the metro city make him a renowned historian of present times. He is also associated with conservation activities.

 

Subbiah Muthiah was born on 13 April 1930 in Pallathur, Madras presidency, British India. He completed his matriculation in 1946, and then moved to US to study arts and engineering. He then moved to Sri Lanka on the completion of course in 1951. Muthiah took up a job with The Times of Ceylon starting his career as a journalist. He served the daily for long 17 years, and reached at the second top position too. He also headed the weekly Sunday edition. When the citizenship laws of the country were amended in 1968, he lost his job and he moved back to India.

 

In India he settled in Chennai and got interested in studying the cultural heritage of the city. He took up a job with T. T. K. Maps, and where he was assigned the tasks of preparation of tourist guides and books on South India. In 1981, Muthiah wrote his first book Madras Discovered based on the researches he done for the preparation of tourist guides. After retiring from T. T. K. Maps in 1990, he turned a full-time writer. He also started Madras Musings and published several books on Madras such as Madras Miscellany and Madras, Chennai: A 400 year record of the first city of Modern India too.
