Madhusudan Dhaky Biography

Madhusudan Dhaky was an Indian writer from Gujarat, best known as an architectural and art historian who authored several non-fictional books related to the subjects. He lived during the period, 31 July 1927 – 29 July 2016. Indian temple architecture, Jain literature and art remained his most favourite subjects to research and write. He also conducted research and studies on Indian classical music. Government of India honoured him with Padma Bhushan in 2010. He died on 29 July 2016 died at his residence at Naranpura, Ahmedabad. He was suffering from age related issues for a brief period.

 

Madhusudan Dhaky was born on 31 July 1927 in Porbandar, Gujarat. He spent his younger days in his hometown where he completed his schooling. For higher studies he moved to Pune and graduated in geology and chemistry from Ferguson College. After studies he worked as a banker for a short period, after which he chose the field of horticulture. In 1951, he established Archaeology Research Group in Porbandar. He has exclusively conducted research works on architectural and art history, and published his findings as papers and books.

 

He published a book titled Indian Temple Architecture in 14 volumes, which is known to be his masterpiece work. He contributed in the construction of modern Somanath temple. Padma Bhushan in 2010, Ranjitram Suvarna Chandrak in 2010 and Kumar Chandrak in 1974 are the major honours received by him. He served as the Director of Research at the Centre for Art and Archaeology at the American institute of Indian Studies in Gurgaon during 1976 – 1996 for two decades. After retirement he served as its Director Emeritus, Research till 2005. The Embroidery and Bead work of Kutch and Saurashtra, Shani Mekhla, Tamra Shashan, The Indian temple Traceries, The Riddle of the Temple of Somanatha etc are among his published books.
