Komarraju Venkata Lakshmana Rao Biography

Komarraju Venkata Lakshmana Rao was an Indian historian and scholar from Andhra Pradesh, who lived during the period, 18 May 1877 – 14 July 1923. He is best known for his masterpiece work, "Andhra vijnana sarvasvam" in three volumes, which he completed with the help of a few students like Rayaprolu Subba Rao. He also wrote more than 40 essays on various subjects such as mathematics, astrology, history, arts etc. He was the younger brother of Bhandaru Acchamamba, one of the early feminist historians in India who lived a short life of 30 years. He is also credited to teaching her four Indian languages at a time when females didn’t own the right of education.

 

Komarraju Venkata Lakshmana Rao was born on 18 May 1877 in a remote village called Penuganchiprolu in Krishna district, Andhra Pradesh. His father was a diwan. He had 3 siblings including one elder sister, Bhandaru Acchamamba. He lost his father as an infant. He did his early education in Bhongir and for advanced studies he travelled to Nagpur. He married Ramakotamma in 1897. He also helped his sister to learn different languages. She also became a noted writer and historian later. He started a publication agency, Vignana Chandrika, under which he published his celebrated work, "Andhra vijnana sarvasvam".

 

He completed his graduation as well as post-graduation in the early 1900s. He also worked as an editor during this time. He began his professional career in 1902 soon after completing his master’s and worked as private secretary to the Nayani Venkata Ranga Rao Bahadur, Zamindar of Munagala. He later became Diwan, before he moved to Chennai. He was a multilingual person and scholar, who later turned a famous historian.
