Bhogilal Sandesara Biography

Bhogilal Sandesara was a 20th century Indian writer belonging to Gujarati literature. He was a literary critic, historian, scholar and editor, who also contributed to the field of historical research. He served as the president of Gujarati Sahitya Parishad in 1987. A multilinguist, he was a scholar of Sanskrit, Prakrit, Apabhramsha and Old Gujarati language. He was a recipient of Ranjitram Suvarna Chandrak (1953) and Narmad Suvarna Chandrak (1962) for his writings. He lived during the period, 13 April 1917 – 18 January 1995.

 

Bhogilal Jayachandbhai Sandesara was born on 13 April 1917 in Patan, Gujarat. He passed his matriculation in 1935, after which he started his career as a journalist. He worked as an editor of Gujarati periodicals such as Gujarat Samachar and Prajabandhu for two years. Then he pursued his graduation and post-graduation in Gujarati and Sanskrit subjects. He joined B. J. Vidyabhavan, Ahmedabad as a lecturer, and by that time started his research works as well. He took PhD in 1950 after which he served as a professor of Gujarati and head of the Gujarati department in M. S. University, Vadodara until his retirement in 1975. He served as the director of Oriental Research Institute during 1958 - 1975.

 

As a historian and researcher, he gave some magnificent contributions towards Indian archaeology. He was a scholar of different religions and Jain religion. He studied the art and sculpture of India, apart from editing a few unpublished manuscripts of medieval Gujarati literature. He published his research works in history and languages, and some of them are Vaghelaonu Gujarat, Itihas ni Kedi, Jyesthimall Jnati ane Malla Puran, Jagannathpuri ane Orissana Puratan Avashesho, Jain Agam Sahityama Gujarat and Mahamatya Vastupalnu Sahityamandal tatha Sanskrit Sahityama Teno Falo.
