P. Thankappan Nair Biography

P. Thankappan Nair is a researcher, historian and writer based in Kolkata. He writes books in Malayalam. He is best known for his research works about Kolkata city, and his findings are published in English language. He has been residing in this metro city for many years and has published 61 books. At the age of 85+ he is still active with his research works and writings and is to publish a book, "Gandhiji in Kolkata". He is one of the prominent south Indians who settled in Kolkata, and loved the city as well. He is nicknamed as the barefoot historian of Calcutta.

 

His full name is Parameswaran Thankappan Nair. He was born on 30 April 1933 in Manjapra near Kalady, Kerala. He completed his matriculation from Aluva, and for higher studies he came to Kolkata for the first time in 1955. He completed his graduation and LLB from the University of Calcutta, and later took a job here. When he noticed that the city was largely unexplored, he chose to write on the city. But in the next 5 decades he gave some immense contributions in the form of research and writings about this city. He also got permanently settled here.

 

He started writing as a hobby, but later took it as a responsibility and became serious about it. He still uses his 1964 Remington typewriter for his writings. Some of his published research works include - First Circulating and College Libraries of Calcutta, Calcutta Tercentenary Bibliography Volumes 1 & 2, A History of Calcutta's Streets, Indian National Songs and Symbols, Indian National Songs and Symbols, The Mango in Indian Life and Culture, South Indians in Kolkata etc.
