B. A. Saletore Biography

B. A. Saletore was a historian and author from Bangalore who lived during 1902–1963 in the 20th century. He published numerous books and papers based on his research works. He is said to be the first historian to use epigraphical sources for the study of social history. Students of today still follow the same technique. His last book, Ancient Indian Political Thought and Institutions, is regarded as his best contribution. He published this book just before his death. He was fully active in researches and writings till the end of his life journey.

 

B. A. Saletore was born in the year 1902 in Saletore, Puttur taluk, South Canara. Later he added the name of his village to his name. His full name is Bhaskar Anand Saletore. He did his primary education in Mangalore, and higher studies from Mumbai. Later he continued his studies from London and Germany. After studies he moved back to India and started his career as a professor. He joined as professor of History at Sir Parshurambhau College in Pune in 1938. He later worked at University of Ahmedabad. He later joined as Bombay Educational Service and retired as Director of National Archives of India in 1960. He later worked as professor at Kannada Research institute at Karnataka University, Dharwad serving different posts, and finally the director.

 

He was a scholar of different languages and has authored several books and hundreds of articles. Social and Political Life in the Vijayanagara Empire was one of his early books which gained him recognition. The book was published in the 1930s as his PhD thesis. Ancient Karnataka - History of Tuluva, Medieval Jainism with special reference to the Vijayanagara Empire, Karnataka's Trans - Oceanic Contacts, Main Currents in the Ancient History of Gujarat and India's Diplomatic Relations with the East are other published books.
