Ravi Varman Biography

Ravi Varman is a film director, producer, screenwriter and cinematographer mostly associated with Hindi and Tamil movies. As a cinematographer, his noted Tamil movies are Vettayadu Vilayadu, Dasavathaaram, Anniyan and Autograph. He started his career in 1999 with Malayalam movies and later moved to other south Indian languages as well as Hindi. As a film director, he debut with Tamil movie, Moscowin Kavery released in 2010, lead roles played by Rahul Ravindran and Samantha. But it took nearly three years for completion.


As a cinematographer, his most recent release Bollywood movie - Goliyon Ki Raasleela Ram-Leela is running in full packed theaters all over India. The movie is directed by Sanjay Leela Bansali. Released in November 2013, this movie has already received appreciations a lot. Cinematography of India’s official entry to academy awards in the year 2012, Barfi was also done by Varman, for which he received numerous awards.


Ravi Varman was born in Poyyoundarkudikkadu near Thanjavur, Tamil Nadu. He lost his mother at a younger age. By chance, his mother’s image was accidentally captured by the photographer in one of the photos for the recent marriage ceremony that she attended. Ravi Varman went to the photographer to get an enlarged version of his mother’s photo and by chance he learnt what "out of focus" meant. Gradually he grew interested in photography and became a successful Indian photographer. His career was started through Malayalam movies. Jalamarmaram, Satyam Sivam Sundaram, Santham, Valiyettan, Vakkalathu Narayanankutty and Kilichindan maampazham were his earliest camera works. He debut Bollywood with Yeh dil in 2003 followed by Jai (Telugu debut) and a few Bollywood films like Armaan, Ramji Londonwale and Phir milenge.


Through Autograph (2004) and Anniyan (2005) he rose to stardom and became one of the leading names of Tamil film industry. He received Filmfare award for Aniyan. In 2007, he received Tamil Nadu state award for his camera work of Vettayadu Vilayadu. He won numerous awards for Barfi including Star screen awards, Apsara, TOIFA and IIFA. In 2000, he received EME France Film Festival Best Cinematographer Award for Malayalam movie, Santham.
