Ranbir Singh Mahendra Biography

Ranbir Singh Mahendra is a senior Indian politician from Haryana belonging to Indian National Congress. He is the son of former Haryana Chief Minister Bansi Lal. He also served as president of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) from 2004 to 2005. Ranbir Singh was also Secretary and Joint Secretary of the BCCI. After father, his son Anirudh Chaudhry got into BCCI hierarchy, and currently serves as Treasurer of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) since 2013. Anirudh Chaudhry has been linked with numerous controversies throughout his professional journey, including the most recent, death threatening of Chief Financial Officer (CFO) of BCCI, Santosh Rangnekar.


Ranbir Singh Mahendra was born into a strong and influential political family of Haryana. His father Bansi Lal was a prominent politician who served as Chief Minister of Haryana, Railway Minister and Defence Minister of India for a few years. Ranbir Singh is a lawyer by profession. He joined the BCCI in 1975, and became the joint secretary in 1980. From there on, he served in several elite positions of the organization. He was elected as the president of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) in 2004, and served the position for a short time till 2005. Jagmohan Dalmiya’s casting vote helped him edge out Sharad Pawar for the top most position of Indian cricket association.


In the 1980s, he served several key positions with the organization, including the role of administrator in 1987 World Cup held in India. He also closely worked with Haryana Cricket Association for many years, and later his son followed his footsteps. In 2001, he was elected as one of the vice presidents of the board, prior to his appointment as president of the Board of Control for Cricket in India in 2004.
