Prashanta Nanda Biography

Prashanta Nanda is a popular film actor of Oriya language. He has also worked as director, screenplay writer, lyricist and a playback singer for Oriya movies. He is a politician and has also served as the former Minister of State of Orissa. In 1962 he debut silver screen in lead role for the movie, Nua Bou which went on to become the best regional film at National award section. He worked with Sarat Pujari and Mani Mala in his debut movie. In 2005 he was given FitFat Bioscope award. He has been a part of Oriya film industry since 1960’s and no discussion about Oriya films is complete without taking his name. Yet he has been not able to win any National award in Feature film section till now.

 

Nanda was born on May 2, 1947. He debut in 1962 with National award winning movie, Nua Bou which showed on screen the social and cultural scenario of rural Indian villages during that time. Though he debut in 1962, he became active in the industry only after 1976 serving in different fields of acting, direction as well as music.  In 1966 he played lead role in Mrinal Sen directed movie, Matira Manisha whixch includes both Gandhian and Marxist ideologies, a noted work. Later he appeared in movies like Shesha Shrabana, Nayya, Samaya and Adina Megha.

 

As a director, his noted movies are Pooja, Swapna sagara, Jaga balia, Bagula Baguli, Maa, Nyaya chakra, Jaa Devi Sarva Bhuteshu, Dora, Paka Kambal Pot Chhota, Hisab Nikas, Golamgiri, Lal Paan Bibi, Om Shanti Om (2002), Grahasti, Shesha Shrabana, Paheli, Nayya and Hisab Nikas. Jianta Bhoota won National Film Awards under National Film Award for Best Non-Feature Film category in the year 2009. As a political leader, he was a member of BJP, but later joined Congress.
